The PhD level research project will involve an empirical investigation in any area of Linguistics. The specific topic will be negotiated with the supervisor.

The Linguistics group at Northumbria University have a wide range of research interests and expertise. We particularly welcome empirical, data-driven projects in the following areas of linguistic study:

·        Applied Linguistics

·        Language learning and language pedagogy

·        First and second language acquisition

·        Forensic linguistics

·        Cognitive linguistics

·        Language and society

·        Semantics

·        Pragmatics

·        Critical discourse analysis

·        Psycholinguistics

·        The evolution of language and communication

·        Heritage languages

·        Historical linguistics and language change

·        Stylistics

·        Educational linguistics

·        Language policy

The successful candidate will undertake PhD level study, working alongside staff and associated PhD students in the English Language & Linguistics group at Northumbria University. It is expected that candidates will have a background in an area of linguistics or English language relevant to their chosen topic. However, applications from candidates with a background in other subject areas relevant to the topic will also be considered.

Northumbria University has a large and lively postgraduate community in the Humanities. Our PhD students benefit from generous research space and resources in the recently expanded Glenamara Centre as well as the Institute of Humanities. PhD students develop a portfolio of skills and competencies through the Humanities Training Programme, the Teaching Shadowing Scheme, the annual PhD conference and the Graduate School’s Professional Development and Research Training Programme. In addition, each PhD student is allocated a personal research allowance to be used for fieldwork costs and/or conference attendance as well as funding to support the organisation and development of research networks, conferences and seminar series.

Please note these eligibility requirements:

·        Academic excellence of the proposed student, i.e. 2:1 (or equivalent GPA from non-UK universities [preference for 1st class honours]); or a Masters (preference for Merit or above); or APEL evidence of substantial practitioner achievement.

·        Appropriate IELTS score, if required.

·        Applicants cannot apply for this funding if currently engaged in Doctoral study at Northumbria or elsewhere.
