Description:
The School of Education at the University of Michigan seeks to appoint an advanced Assistant or Associate professor in Educational Studies with a focus on Multilingual Learners and Educational Linguistics. We seek someone who draws on meaning-focused theories of language and/or socio-cultural theories of language learning to value the full complexity of language development in more than one language. We hope to hire a scholar with a foundation in applied/functional linguistics who can contribute to teaching and research on language issues in education, with particular attention to educational equity and justice.
The successful candidate should, through their research, teaching, and/or service, contribute to the diversity, inclusion, justice and equity (dije) goals of the University of Michigan School of Education.
We will consider applicants knowledgeable in the general areas of multilingual learners and educational linguistics, with specialization in areas of interest including linguistic diversity, language education, discourse analysis, and related fields. We will give higher priority to the overall originality and promise of the candidate’s work rather than the sub-area of specialization.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the teaching of Educational Linguistics, Language Development, Second Language Teaching and Learning, Discourse Analysis, or related topics across undergraduate and graduate level coursework in multiple programs across the SOE, including the Educator Preparation Program (EPP), the Education for Empowerment minor, and the new Learning, Equity and Problem Solving for the Public Good (LEAPS) program.
Candidates should be prepared to participate actively in our doctoral program as well as masters and undergraduate courses, including teacher education courses; as well as supervise doctoral students in their programs and research and graduate teaching and/or research assistants.
Candidates should be prepared to mentor students, as well as serve on advising and/or dissertation committees.
Qualifications:
Successful candidates will have:
- A doctorate in education, applied linguistics, second language teaching and learning, or related fields
- Proficiency in a language other than English
- A commitment to diversity, inclusion, justice and equity, as evidenced through teaching, service and scholarship
- An established program of research, writing, and other scholarly activities related to multilingual learners and educational linguistics, including bilingual/multilingual education, language development, linguistics in education, language variation in education
- Expertise in theoretical perspectives that include functional approaches to language that recognize language as meaning-making and that engage critically with socio-political contexts to support equity and inclusion, and a commitment to diversity, inclusion, justice and equity
- Interest in contributing to programs and partnerships in educational linguistics, including those focused on the professional development of teachers to meet the needs of bilingual/multilingual learners
- Experience mentoring and/or the capacity to mentor students of diverse backgrounds and evidence of a commitment to working collegially and with individuals from diverse backgrounds
- A track record of or potential for developing and securing grants to support research
