DEPARTMENT OF CHINESE AND BILINGUAL STUDIES
The Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is one of the constituent departments of the Faculty of Humanities. One of the core missions of the Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies is to promote and develop studies of Chinese in multilingual contexts and studies of multilingualism in Chinese contexts. It has built a reputation in Applied Chinese Language Studies, and seeks to extend its strength in areas like Bilingualism (including Translation and Interpreting), Intercultural Communication and East Asian Studies. Another mission of the Department is to offer profession-oriented programmes that meet the career aspirations of young adults in Hong Kong and elsewhere in Greater China. It offers bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programmes in Chinese Linguistics, Chinese Language Teaching, Speech Therapy, Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Translating & Interpreting, and Bilingual Corporate Communication. It also offers courses in Korean/Japanese language and culture at bachelor’s level. Within the Department, there is a Centre for Translation Studies, a PolyU-PekingU Research Centre on Chinese Linguistics, a Speech Therapy Unit, and a Chinese Language Centre which provides training in Chinese language and Putonghua for the whole University. Professor / Associate Professor / Assistant Professor in Applied Language Sciences
Duties
The appointees will be required to:
(a) engage in teaching and related learning activities at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels;
(b) assume an important role in curriculum design and development;
(c) undertake academic research in their areas of expertise, including but not limited to making applications for external research grants;
(d) provide administrative support for academic development and departmental objectives, and play an active role in programme management;
(e) render professional service to the discipline and/or the community at large; and
(f) perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of Department or his/her delegates.
Appointees at Professor and Associate Professor levels will be expected to provide academic leadership in their areas of expertise.
Qualifications
Applicants should have:
(a) a PhD degree in a relevant discipline, preferably with the specialism in Clinical Linguistics, Special Education Needs, Language Pathology, Speech Therapy, Neuroscience or Computational Linguistics with usage of language technology in digital humanities and big data analytics. Additional expertise in other areas of the humanities such as media studies or language and literature will be a significant advantage;
(b) relevant post-qualification teaching and research experience and a proven record of relevant academic and/or professional achievements;
(c) a high level of fluency in English; and
(d) a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarly activities and professional service.
Preference will be given to those who are fluent in Cantonese or Putonghua, and literate in written Chinese.
Applicants for appointment at Assistant Professor level should normally have evidence-based research experience (as supported by evidence of research projects and outputs). Experience of postdoctoral research positions will be a plus but not required.
Applicants for appointment at Professor and Associate Professor levels should have substantial years of relevant post-qualification experience and an excellent record of relevant academic and/or professional achievements. Candidates with less experience will be considered for appointment at a lower level.
Remuneration and Conditions of Service
A highly competitive remuneration package will be offered. Initial appointment for Assistant Professor will be on a fixed-term gratuity-bearing contract. Re-engagement thereafter is subject to mutual agreement. An appropriate term will be provided for appointment at Associate Professor and Professor levels.
